Free Wireless Articles via IEEE

November 17th, 2008 by Jason Ernst

Just a quick post today since I’m strapped for time, but thought its pretty useful (and almost a reminder to myself to check this out later). The IEEE has put a bunch of articles related to wireless networks written by leaders in the field up for free for a limited time.

(I know this doesn’t benefit me directly since I already belong to those societies and could probably get access to them through my libraries, but they seem interesting enough and I will likely read at least a few the next chance I get). It’s also helpful for those people who don’t necessarily have normal access to IEEE articles a chance to try them out. Topics include Pervasive Computing, Internet Computing, Security, RFIDs and more. Check it out if you get a chance!

10 Applications of Wireless Networks

June 26th, 2008 by Jason Ernst

wifi-heart-monitor

Wireless Networks have become very popular in recent years and research in the area is very active. It is one of my main research interests while studying for my M.Sc. in Applied Computing at the University of Guelph so I thought I would write a bit about what I think are some of the most useful or interesting applications of wireless networking both now and in the future.

How to Get People to Pay for Online Music & Movies

May 9th, 2008 by Jason Ernst

DRM

The other day while I was doing my mindless part-time job in a warehouse, I got thinking about what bothers me about buying music online. I think I narrowed it down to at least three main reasons. The first one being, I don’t like the idea of paying for music when there is the possibility that I will lose the music if I reinstall my computer (which I do fairly often). If there was some type of guarantee that I would have the music for my lifetime after purchasing it then I would be happy to pay for it. I realize that this is greatly against what the music industry has done in the past with their switching to new media and reselling the music (ex from vinyl to 8-track to tape to cd…etc) but I think that if they could make the guarantee that the music would not be lost they could charge more, and people would be more likely to buy it (at least I would).

Java Discrete Event Driven Simulation

April 14th, 2008 by Jason Ernst

Recently in my Networks course at Guelph they had us create an event-driven discrete simulation to model both a wireless network and a switch. For the project I got a hexagonal geometry for the wireless network which was to be arranged similar to a Manhattan Street Network with each node having at most six neighbours. Other groups got triangular and square geometries for this portion.  For the switch I got an 8×8 Banyan switch. Other groups got the crossbar switch or backplane switches.

Thesis Topic

February 2nd, 2008 by Jason Ernst

WMN

The last few days have been extremely busy. I have finally settled on a thesis topic after a few months trying to decide. In case you don’t know my area of interest has been in wireless networks for some time. However this was not specific enough so withing that area I am focusing on Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs). A WMN is a network made up of wireless mesh clients and wireless mesh routers. The routers are usually stationary or have limited mobility while the clients are highly mobile. In some cases, the clients may also act as routers in order to allow connectivity to be extended farther away from the access points. For my thesis I have proposed to create a new high performance protocol for WMNs which will allow the network to scale better than current solutions.
